This was the background information for my ‘RIBA Pylon Competion’ entry – ‘A Stitch in Time’. The Competition ran back in 2011 and was the oppertunity for designers to submit ideas for a new pylon design that would be implemented across the country.
My theme considered power lines and pylons to be an organic ‘thread’ that tied or knitted the landscape and countryside together. Node points and connections across the country are stitched together with the pylons acting like knots along a string. This combined with a parabolic form created a unique design that would stand out on a horizon and be a new way of thinking from the standard approach to pylon design.
We also considered the appearance of the cable design when viewed ‘end-on’ to be like the spokes of a wheel or a spiders web. Unfortunatly the design didnt win.
