It felt like Christmas morning for me yesterday. That feeling you get the moment before you rip off the wrapper to something you have been wanting for months and months. It wasnt ‘Castle Greyskull’ (He-Man), but a new gadget! Merseytravel are currently testing their new travel card the ‘Walrus’ on the entire public transport network including the busses, trains and ferries. Trial cards have been sent out to a limited number of volunteers to test its functionality and iron out any faults before it goes on public release in late Autumn 2012. I’ve been selected to have a play with the card and received a proximity reader that is connected to the PC and used to top the card up, software to run the reader, an online profile / login from Merseytravel and the Walrus card itself. Im sure it wont be long before these are a very common sight to the regular commuters, but at the moment this gadget is all very hi-tech and futuristic.
It is similar in functionality to the ‘Oyster’ in London and the ‘Octopus’ in Hong Kong (underwater sea creature based theme anyone?) – but this obviously pays a tiresome nod to Liverpools famous four.
Ah go on then, I have a Walrus, goo goo g’joob goo goo g’joob.
